FDA threatens Alex Jones with legal action over false coronavirus claims

Alex Jones is reportedly making false claims about products he sells and their effectiveness against the coronavirus and now the FDA is giving him 48 hours to stop:

POLITICO – The Food and Drug Administration warned right-wing media personality Alex Jones to stop making false coronavirus claims about products touted and sold by his websites or face legal action and a possible order to pay back consumers.

The agency late today pointed to a range of misleading videos posted to Jones’ website, InfoWars, that promote unproven silver products including toothpaste as possible coronavirus treatments. The pro-Trump conspiracy theory website and its founder have been banned from various social media sites, and Google earlier this year removed the Infowars show from its Android App for spreading coronavirus misinformation.

Jones has claimed the products sold on InfoWars, which have no evidence behind them, can “boost your immune system.” He said in March said the wound gel and two toothpastes are “on record taking out viruses and bacteria.”

The FDA has warned against colloidal silver, especially fake claims about the coronavirus.

FDA and the Federal Trade Commission gave the InfoWars founder 48 hours to respond to their warning and threatened to seize products or take legal action if he did not.

Below is just one of several instances that the FDA highlights with respect to Jones’ false claims:

A video posted on 3/10/2020, titled “Alex Jones Deep States: Using Coronavirus Fear and Panic To Destroy Our Country.” At minute 13:25, you state: “[R]egardless of how deadly this virus is . . . if it kills you, it’s bad news. So, I would advise listeners, just for your everyday life anyway to boost your immune system. We have the products that are documented on record to be good for your body. I mean Nano Silver is on record taking out viruses and bacteria. It’s in our entire line of high quality silver products and it’s patented, it’s amazing, it’s in the Super Silver Wound gel, it’s in the Super Silver Toothpaste, it is in the Super Blue Toothpaste . . . we’re very close to selling out in infowarsstore.com . . . “

There’s a couple more in the FDA warning letter to Jones if you want to read them. The FDA writes “Failure to immediately correct the violations cited in this letter may result in legal action, including, without limitation, seizure and injunction.”
