Fox News is bringing back the famous show ‘Cops’ after it was canceled last year during the BLM protests that followed the death of George Floyd. There’s only one catch:
THE HILL – Fox News Media is bringing back the TV show “Cops” this fall.
The network will premier the 33rd season of the long-running reality TV police show via its streaming network Fox Nation on Oct. 1, the network announced.
The debut will include the first four episodes of the new season, and each new installment of the show thereafter will drop weekly on Friday nights.
“Cops” was canceled by Paramount Network last year following protests against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by now-former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Several other networks also stopped airing reality TV shows featuring police work following Floyd’s death, like A&E’s “Live PD.”
“Cops is one of the most iconic brands on television with an incredibly passionate fan base,” Fox Nation President Jason Klarman said in a statement. “We wanted to show our appreciation to all first responders by combining the launch with a free one-year subscription to give back in a small way to those who place their lives on the line every day to keep us safe.”
Fox will offer all first responders, including police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics, a free one-year subscription to Fox Nation beginning this week, the network said, and donate $5 to Answer the Call, a charity supporting families of killed police and first responders in New York City for every new subscriber.
Along with the “Cops” reboot, Fox News said it will also roll out a new slate of first responder-themed shows on Fox Nation, anchored by various network hosts and personalities, including a ridealong show with paramedics and a feature program highlighting policy-community engagement programs across the country.
I’m really glad Fox News is bringing it back, however I wish they were doing so in a more visible way, as in on the Fox News channel. Heck, I remember in the past watching prison shows on MSNBC on the weekends and it’d be nice if Fox News was to find a time slow for the show. But I get it, they want to add to their streaming service that they’ve been pushing hard this year.
Either way, the show lives again and that’s a good thing. It should have never been canceled in the first place.
