Glenn Youngkin apologizes for unauthorized campaign tweet attacking high schooler

Over the weekend someone on Glenn Youngkin’s campaign tweeted out a meme attacking a high school student after that student tweeted an article claiming that Youngkin was refusing to “highlight the history of enslaved people at the Executive Mansion” like his predecessors.

Here’s the story:

DAILY MAIL – Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s campaign is facing an angry backlash after it went after a teenager on Twitter.

On Saturday, the official Twitter account for Youngkin’s campaign lashed out against 17-year-old Ethan Lynne and Democrat Ralph Northam, tweeting the high schooler’s name and photo after he shared a news story about the Republican Governor’s residence.

Lynne tweeted a report from the Richmond public radio station VPM suggesting that the Republican Governor was considering halting efforts pursued by previous governors Ralph Northam and Democrat Terry McAuliffe to highlight the history of enslaved people at the Executive Mansion, the Washington Post reported.

Youngkin’s campaign tweeted Lynne’s name with a photo of him with former governor Northam, alongside a picture reportedly featuring a photo of Northam in blackface, although the governor has denied that is him in the image.

‘Here’s a picture of Ethan with a man that had a Blackface/KKK photo in his yearbook’ the now-deleted post was captioned.

‘Last night, the Governor’s official campaign account attacked me, a high-school senior and 17-year-old on Twitter,’ Lynne’s statement read. ‘I want to thank everyone for all the calls/text of support. They’ve deleted it, but I have received no communication from the Governor’s office.

Since this happened there’s been a lot of media and social media backlash aimed at the governor.

This morning Governor Youngkin tweeted an apology from his personal account, saying that this never should have happened and he’s dealt with it:

This is a somewhat small thing to be sure. But the same garbage media that refuses to scandalize their favorite president, no matter how many Americans, is certainly scandalizing this for Youngkin.
