As the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was burning I saw a few people sarcastically suggest that it was just ‘some building somewhere’, in an obvious attempt to mock how Ilhan Omar recently described 9/11.
Well they weren’t far off because that’s basically how she characterized the centuries-old Christian Church yesterday as it burned.
Here’s what she said:
Art and architecture have a unique ability to help us connect across our differences and bring people together in important ways. Thinking of the people of Paris and praying for every first responder trying to save this wonder.

Do you think this is how she’d refer to the Dome of the Rock if it went up in flames? No way.
But I bet dollars to donuts that she’d be very upset if Trump made her comment about the Grand Mosque in Mecca if it were burning, calling it just “art and architecture”.
Many on Twitter didn’t take kind to her comments either:
This is disrespectful toward Catholics specifically and Christians in general. Notre Dame represents a bit more than “art and architecture” — lest anyone think Omar merely enjoys dissing Jews. https://t.co/q116xtcZ8j

“Art and architecture”? It’s a church. https://t.co/g5hISMyZt1

Did the Louvre burn, or was it a storage facility for overflow art? Or was it a Catholic cathedral? Can’t tell from this word salad. https://t.co/6wgpaM9SaQ

Well, the “architecture” that the art was housed in is a cathedral. While Biblically Christ is wherever His people are, Notre Dame is a significant and storied icon of faith. https://t.co/bsckz26qHe

The “art and architecture” has a name. It’s called Notre Dame Cathedral. It is a place of worship for Catholics. https://t.co/osbcWZ1A1I

A Christian Church burns and she is concerned about art and architecture. I wonder if that would be her take if Mecca burned. https://t.co/PmiASpqt94

I have the keen sensation that she knows precisely what she’s doing. https://t.co/JxBxXp6uYy
