Iran has admitted today that it is enriching uranium to weapons-grade levels, violating the Iran deal it signed in 2015:
ABC NEWS – Iran acknowledged Monday it had broken the limit set on its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by the 2015 nuclear deal, marking its first major departure from the unraveling agreement a year after the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the accord.
Iran had been expected for days to acknowledge it broke the limit after earlier warning it would do so. It held off on publicly making an announcement as European leaders met Friday in Vienna to discuss ways to save the accord. Iran has threatened to increase its enrichment of uranium closer to weapons-grade levels by July 7.
The deal was phony from the beginning. It was never meant to keep Iran from enriching uranium to weapons-grade levels. If anything it was just delaying the inevitable, which is coming soon.
Ted Cruz issued a response to this, calling on Trump to deliver more crippling sanctions to the Iranian regime:
HOUSTON, Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement in response to reports that Iran has violated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA):
“The catastrophic Obama Iran nuclear deal was built to allow Iran to cheat, both by making it difficult to detect violations and by giving other countries an incentive to dismiss those violations when they became undeniable. Iran began exploiting the deal before it was even implemented, secretly preserving nuclear weapons infrastructure and openly violating limits on nuclear-related materials – only to have the parties reflexively ignore the violations, downplay them as minor, or provide still-confidential side deals and loopholes.
“Unfortunately, but predictably, today we are already seeing many in Washington D.C. and abroad downplay Iran’s latest violation.
“It’s time to put an end to this charade. The Trump administration should increase sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program, first by ending the civil-nuclear waivers the State Department has been providing, which allow Iran to continue building up its nuclear program, and second by invoking the United Nations snapback, to restore international sanctions and restrictions on Iran. In the meantime, Congress should pass the legislation I’ve introduced to increase economic pressure on Iran by sanctioning the Special Purpose Vehicle built by Britain, France, Germany, and Iran to preserve the Ayatollah’s economic lifeline, and I will continue to work with my Congressional colleagues to ensure that maximum pressure means maximum pressure.”
Iran is essentially spitting in the face of America with their attacks on ships in the Persian Gulf, attacking our drone in international airspace, and now this. It’s only a matter of time before they end up with nuclear weapons. I know we’ve been saying that for years, but Iran appears more defiant than ever and there’s no reason to think they are gonna slow down on their own.
