JUST IN: Dick’s Sporting Goods looking to get OUT of the gun business

The decision to stop selling so-called ‘assault’ weapons has taken its toll on Dick’s Sporting goods.

We reported in December that their CEO has admitted that his liberal gun control policies have hurt the business and they may have to close some stores down.

Well now they are looking to try something new: getting out of the gun business altogether:

CBS NEWS – Dick’s Sporting Goods said Tuesday it’s removing guns from 125 of its stores, further cutting back from the category following the Parkland, Florida, school shooting just over one year ago.

The company stopped selling guns in 10 stores last year to test how they perform and has now decided to remove firearms from 125 additional stores after seeing positive sales. Dick’s has over 700 stores in the U.S.

Dick’s CEO Ed Stack said the changes will be completed late this year, and the company will consider removing firearms in coming years depending on how these 125 stores perform.

Shares in the sporting goods store fell 11.2 percent, or $4.35, in Tuesday trading to close at $34.61.

So they are starting with 125 stores and if it works out, they’ll purge guns from the rest of their stores. That’s the way I read it.

Honestly, I don’t care all that much anymore. I’m never buying another gun from Dick’s or Field and Stream anyway. So if they get out of the gun business, that’s fine with me. I’d rather shop at local gun stores anyway.

Question: How long do you think it’ll be until we see Stack running for president on the Democratic ticket?

I’m confused… they found that their silly policy from last year is hurting their brand, so in order to “turn the ship around” they decide to double down on the policy?? I tell ya… sometimes I wonder how some people who have money were ever able to make it.

It looks like they are dropping all hunting supplies, including rifles. I guess the hunters were not impressed that they claimed to only be dropping “assault rifles,” and decided to stop buying anything else there.

It sounds like they are doubling down on the stupid, It’s almost like they think people will just forget that they are Anti-Second amendment.

I guess that people aren’t aware that this attitude goes way back. They quit selling pistols after the Giffords shooting, which is when they lost my business.

Works for me. I’ve been “out” of ‘Dick’s Sporting Goods’ since I don’t remember when.

Haven’t darkened the doors of the” Dicks” store since they made their decision. And we never will. We have choices and I don’t need what they are selling. We on the right have huge memories and never forget. They are not doing well so that will be what it will be.

Please, let me fix that headline for you:

Dicks Sporting Goods is looking to go OUT of Business

Much more accurate.

Hope they go out of guns and then go out of business.

I’m a little confused. How can they say it hurt stores to the point they had to close some stores, yet say they are expanding the practice to 125 stores because of positive sales? What am I missing?

kong1967kong1967 It’s pretty confusing, but I think what they’re saying is that their hunting sales dropped, so they were stocking hunting supplies but not selling them. So they tried dropping hunting accessories completely from 10 stores, and found those stores did better by not even trying to keep hunting supplies in stock.. Since those 10 stores at least weren’t losing money on their hunting supply business, they expanded that practice to all their stores.

I buy all my guns from a local mom & pop store. Dick’s never got a dime of my business & never will. Bad, bad business decision by those who do what they do for “the chi’lrun” and Gaia. Horsefeathers!

If not selling firearms is a principled stance, why the need to market test the idea with 125 stores? Just do it with all 700+ stores, and when the business model fails, sell out to Academy Sports.

Shop at Cabela’s instead.

AvatarJodi Cabela’s is going downhill since they were bought by Bass Pro. Even the employees are unhappy and some of them will say so to the customer, which to me indicates a high level of discontent. All of my gun purchases will be local now.

I don’t shop at Dick’s and if I wanted to buy a gun I wouldn’t go to Dick’s to buy one. I prefer actual gun shops because I like dealing with people that know they’re business.

An 11.2% loss in one day is HUGE.

Honestly, they’ll be lucky to survive this at all, unless Corporate will let them pool the profits from their profitable Golf Galaxy chains.

I don’t know about you, but when Dick’s Sporting Goods announced they would discontinue the sale of Assault Weapons (what an ABSURD, STUPID, RADICAL LIBERAL PHRASE) I was through with both of them.

@Proud Nana Bass Pro and Cabela’s are rather expensive and I only use them for items that I can’t get elsewhere. Many of the same products (exclusive firearms, of course) are available cheaper on Amazon. But then, Amazon doesn’t have those huge aquariums and taxidermy displays to pay for.

Since no one buys guns from those backstabbing clowns anyway there is really no point for them to be in the gun business now is there?
