Just Who Is Looking Out For Our Troops And Our Vets … And Who ISN’T?

Tomorrow is Memorial Day. Many of us will mark it by remembering family and friends who served that are no longer with us. President Obama has marked this holiday by suprising our troops in Afghanistan with a visit and speech about their service and sacrifice. It should also be noted he has celebrated this day by failing to take seriously the scandal in the VA where sick veterans waiting for appointments are dying because of lack of care. Waiting on secret lists so bureaucrats can pad their resumes. Sort of how the Commander in Chief is padding his by dropping in on the troops.

Two weeks ago was Armed Forces Day. I wonder how many people outside of our men and women who’ve served or have family who have, know the difference between Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day. Or Veterans Day for that matter. I drove around our area with several errands on that day and did not see one flag lowered in recognition and honor of our brave troops. On that weekend, before he was under intense fire over the VA scandal, the President made little remark on the men and women who have given, served and sacrificed. Instead our Commander in Chief chose to tweet about #IDAHOT otherwise known as “International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia”.

This is not the first time President Obama has, it seems, tried to hurt our military from within. In 2012 Wayne Dupree reported that Obama and the Dems sued Ohio to disenfranchise veterans.

On July 17th, the Obama for America Campaign, the Democratic National Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party filed suit in OH to strike down part of that state’s law governing voting by members of the military. Their suit said that part of the law is “arbitrary” with “no discernible rational basis.”

Currently, Ohio allows the public to vote early in-person up until the Friday before the election. Members of the military are given three extra days to do so. While the Democrats may see this as “arbitrary” and having “no discernible rational basis,” I think it is entirely reasonable given the demands on servicemen and women’s time and their obligations to their sworn duty.

But remember, North Carolina hates voters because of ID.

Then we have the repeal of the DADT law. Instead of accomplishing the goal they say they were after, which is combating homophobia, all they did was create tension in the ranks. It wasn’t necessary. It was working fine. From the outside civilians think that law meant a lot of things it did not mean. In reality, it simply eliminated the need to care about the sexual preference of your fellow service member. They were simply your comrade. But Obama would rather feel good and tolerant than be wise and careful.

Wait, it keeps going. There’s the changes to the military dress code. Specifically toward the Sikhs, allowing men to have beards and turbins, but anyone else may apply for religious reasons. Oh, except Christians; they still have to shave and pass inspection. And this does not even address the battle underway to remove restrictions on hair style for black members of the military, a protest from the ranks that would have been unthinkable until Obama was in charge. Once again, the idea is allowing supposed tolerance to be more important than actual order and discipline, not to mention safety! One reason for the dress code is to insure the unit functions as a team and provide anonymity on the battle field so one person or group isn’t targeted.

Regarding the religious exception, the Pentagon released this statement: “Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, spokesman for the Pentagon’s personnel and readiness office, said the Defense Department does not know how many troops would be affected by the amended policy, but the hope is it ‘will enhance commanders’ and supervisors’ ability to promote the climate necessary to maintain good order and discipline, and would reduce both the instances and perception of discrimination among those whose religious expressions are less familiar to the command.'”

By revising the military dress code so as not to alienate any one sect and providing equal opportunities, they are actually becoming more visible and easier targets for anyone who wants to commit any act of discrimination. Don’t forget the intolerance of our primary enemies in our ongoing war on terror.

It has seemed for a while now that the government was more harm than good when it comes to veterans’ and troops’ problems. With vets literally dying from lack of care, it’s even more clear. On Memorial Day, remember those who have fallen in war, to enemies, to injury, to disease. Those who fought and came home and eventually passed on. And of course, remember those who died so recently, and so needlessly, on President Obama’s watch.
