Lindsey Graham was on with Hannity last night lambasting Democrats for their hypocrisy over border wall funding.
Graham said that he’s seen them, under previous presidents, vote for much larger amounts for border security. He says they simply don’t want Trump to win on the issue and that’s why they are saying ‘hell no’ to Trump.
But it’s the end of the interview where Graham underscores the importance of this fight, saying that Trump can’t give up or that’s the end of his presidency:
If he gives in now, that’s the end of 2019 in terms of him being an effective president. That’s probably the end of his presidency. Donald Trump has made a promise to the American people. He’s going to secure our border.
I think he’s right because this promise was absolutely central to Trump’s campaign to be president. It will be key to his reelection in 2020.
However we all know that if Trump does give in and go a different route, using funding from the Pentagon or other areas in the government, Graham and the rest will be behind him, blaming Democrats for the fact that Trump has to fulfill his promise through other means.
By the way, Graham does address this alternative route to funding the wall in the interview. He essentially agrees that Trump can do it, but says a move like that would be met with lawsuits and argues that Trump really shouldn’t have to play that game. It’s clear Graham would much rather Trump keep the fight against Democrats using the government shutdown to force their hand than to go the alternative route.
