On Friday night, in the wake of the death of John Lewis, Marco Rubio mistakenly tweeted a photo of Elijah Cummings in his tribute to Lewis.
Rep. Elijah Cummings used to say being mistaken frequently for John Lewis was an honor and the pair used to laugh about it.

On Saturday, Rubio acknowledged his error and retweeted a photo of both he and John Lewis:
Earlier today I tweeted an incorrect photo
John Lewis was a genuine American hero
I was honored to appear together in Miami 3 years ago at an event captured in video below
My God grant him eternal resthttps://t.co/aEm4MxKxBP pic.twitter.com/0UpWSG3vNQ

But that didn’t stop CNN’s Brian Stelter and the media from making a big deal about over the weekend:
Media: @brianstelter to @abbydphillip & @VictorBlackwell on two @GOP senators, @SenDanSullivan (AK) and @marcorubio (FL), using photos of Elijah Cummings, who passed in October, in honoring the late #John Lewis: "What can you say? This is humiliating for these senators." @NewDay pic.twitter.com/A0Mv9dcomd

Rubio responded this morning noting that the media themselves have done the same thing numerous times:
Never post a photo unless it has been verified as accurate by a major media outlet such as @CNN
These people are trained professionals who never make mistakes such as using the wrong photo or misidentifying someone https://t.co/9MXx9hTNlU pic.twitter.com/t2prINhZZN

Rubio posted the following images in his tweet. He noted first that, after CNN’s Brian Stelter had criticized him over the weekend, that CNN had done the very same thing just last year:
He also tweeted images of CBS News making the same mistake and having to apologize for it:
Ted Cruz spoke up in defense Rubio this weekend, hitting back at Twitter for trying to shame him over the mistake:
Twitter is slamming Marco for mistakenly posting the wrong photo.
FWIW, others often confuse Marco & me. People regularly come up to me & say “I love you, Sen. Rubio.”
I don’t correct them & I’ll take a pic, but as they’re taking it I whisper, “actually, I voted for Cruz.” 🤷🏻♂️

That’s funny because he and Rubio look nothing alike. In the case of Cummings and Lewis, they looked quite similar and clearly others had made the same mistake.
