Mass shooting at Fedex facility leaves 8 dead and several others wounded…

Eight are dead and several wounded after a man opened fire at a Fedex facility in Indianapolis late last night before killing himself:

FOX 59 – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said at least eight people died and several others were wounded during a mass shooting on the southwest side. IMPD confirmed just before 7 a.m. Friday that the FBI will assist them in the investigation.

IMPD said the shooting happened at the FedEx ground facility in the 8900 block of Mirabel Road. When officers arrived around 11 p.m., they encountered an active shooter incident.

“After a preliminary search of the grounds inside and out, we have located eight people at the scene with injuries consistent to gunshot wounds. Those eight were pronounced dead here at the scene,” said Officer Genae Cook with IMPD.

Preliminary information from the department indicated the shooter took his own life, Cook said.

Eight victims at the scene were pronounced dead. Police did not include the shooter in that toll. Several others wounded in the shooting were transported to area hospitals. There were multiple walk-ins at hospitals, Cook said.

Four people were transported by ambulance, including one in critical condition with gunshot wounds. Three others were transported for other injuries, Cook said, while two victims were treated by medical staff at the scene.

The BBC reports that one witness said the weapon used was some kind of automatic sub-machine gun:

Local media quoted FedEx worker Jeremiah Miller as saying he had seen the gunman firing.

“I saw a man with a sub-machine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open. I immediately ducked down and got scared,” he said.

A witness to the incident said that another man tried to stop the shooter by pulling his own gun, but he was killed. He also describes the gun as an AR:

NY POST – A mystery man may have tried to thwart the gunman who opened fire at a FedEx facility in Indiana late Thursday — pulling out his own gun in vain before being shot dead, according to a witness.

Levi Miller, who works at the plant in Plainfield just outside Indianapolis, was on break when he heard the quick succession of gun shots in the parking lot.

“My friend at the time witnessed a man who was not part of the incident but also pulled out a gun from his truck to try and engage the shooter and he died because of it,” Miller said Friday morning on NBC’s “Today” show.

Miller, who was about to work a second shift that night, recalled seeing the gunman and hearing his indecipherable screams as shots were being fired.

“I see a man, a hooded figure … the man did have an AR in his hand, and he started shouting and then he started firing at random directions,” he said.
