McConnell sends letter slamming the door in Biden’s face on raising the debt ceiling

Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell slammed the proverbial door shut on Biden in a letter responding to his push for Republicans to help raise the debt ceiling:

THE HILL – Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) is urging President Biden to lean on Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to get Democrats to raise the debt ceiling on their own.

“I respectfully submit that it is time for you to engage directly with congressional Democrats on this matter,” McConnell says of the debt ceiling in a letter to Biden.

“Your lieutenants in Congress must understand that you do not want your unified Democratic government to sleepwalk toward an avoidable catastrophe when they have had nearly three months’ notice to do their job,” McConnell writes.

“Republicans’ position is simple. We have no list of demands. For two and a half months, we have simply warned that since your party wishes to govern alone, it must handle the debt limit alone as well,” McConnell added.

McConnell’s letter to Biden comes shortly before the president gives a speech on the need to raise the debt ceiling. Congress has until Oct. 18, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, to act or risk a historic default.

I know it’s a roller coaster with Mitch McConnell, however I very much like his leadership on this issue. Senate Republicans have thus far refused to help Democrats raise the debt ceiling to pay for their gargantuan spending bills and McConnell is making clear that they will not do the bidding of Democrats to wreck this country.

My favorite line from the letter is this: “…since your party wishes to govern alone, it must handle the debt limit alone as well.”

Of course Biden will try and shame Republicans when he gives this speech, much like Obama did when Boehner was running the show. But considering Biden’s disastrous agenda, I’m pretty sure it’s not going to fly as long as the RINOs in the Senate don’t capitulate.

Even if they did capitulate on the debt ceiling, Republicans are not the reason Biden can’t pass his colossal spending bills. Democrats are in a civil war over these bills until they can unify, which doesn’t seem likely, these bills are dead.
