The Senate failed to pass Mike Lee’s religious liberty amendment for the unconstitutional ‘gay marriage act’ by one vote.
Lee’s amendment would have guarnateed protection for the religous beliefs of people who disagree with same-sex marriage and would have been targeted for discrimination because of the parent legislation.
My amendment simply prohibits the Federal Government from retaliating against schools, businesses, and organizations because of their religious beliefs about same-sex marriage.
That is all it does. pic.twitter.com/xBdUiiybWA

Here’s the news from Senate Press Gallery:
By a vote of 48-49, the #Senate did not adopt the Lee amendment #6482, in relation to H.R. 8404 Respect for Marriage Act. 60-vote affirmative threshold was needed.

Senate Press Gallery also notes that while Manchin voted for the amendment, Susan Collins voted against it. And Sasse and Toomey didn’t even bother to vote:
Senator Manchin voted YEA
Senator Collins Voted NAYNot Voting: Sasse, Toomey, and Warnock

So now we’re going to be stuck with this horrendous bill that redifines marriage and will be used as a cudgel against those of us Christians who would rather honor God’s definition of marriage in our workplaces than man’s.
And it’s all because weak-willed so-called Republicans went along with it.
BREAKING: Senate votes 62-37 to break filibuster on bill to codify same-sex marriage into law:
GOP senators who voted yes:
Blunt (MO)
Burr (NC)
Capito (WV)
Collins (ME)
Lummis (WY)
Portman (OH)
Romney (UT)
Sullivan (AK)
Tillis (NC)
Ernst (IA)
Young (IN)
Murkowski (AK)— Greg Price (@greg_price11) November 16, 2022
But the worst of these are Portman of Ohio, Collins of Maine, and Tillis of North Carolina. They are the ones who joined with three Democrats on a ‘religious liberty amendment’ that doesn’t have any teeth.
I knew when they agreed on this amendment that it wasn’t a serious effort to protect Christians and Lee’s amendment failing to pass proves the point emphatically.
