Defending the single parent families, MSNBC Melissa Harris-Perry used Jesus as an example and said that even He was born to an “unwed mom with a doting step-father”:
To compare Mary and Joseph having Jesus to a single mother in this day and age is ludicrous and it shows how stupid this host is to even make the comparison. But even the comparison is wrong on all counts and makes clear she knows little of the birth of Jesus.
First of all, let’s not forget we’re talking about the Immaculate Conception. That’s part of the miracle of Christ’s birth, that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. She wasn’t just sleeping around with Joseph and just happened to get pregnant because she forgot to take her birth control pill. And when Mary realized she was with child, she and Joseph did get married after an angel convinced Joseph that this was a divine conception by the Holy Spirit, and it was before she gave birth:
Matthew 1:24, 25, “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.”
So Mary wasn’t ‘unwed’ nor was she a single mom. Nor was Joseph a ‘step-father’. He was the earthly father of Jesus, just as Mary was the earthly mother of Jesus.
