New York state finally deals major blow to squatters

Home owners in the state of New York have finally gotten relief from their legislators to give them back control over squatters who have infested their homes.

Both the legislator and the governor have approved a chance to their laws that redefines a ‘tenant’ as not including a ‘squatter’.

Here’s more from ABC 7 News who was the one to expose the problem of squatters in New York:

Governor Kathy Hochul signed a portion of the New York State budget Monday morning that will change the way tenants are defined in state law.

Lawmakers say it will make it easier for police to intervene in squatting cases instead of having to take them to housing court.

The new law takes effect immediately and comes over a series of 7 On Your Side Investigations into the growing problem.

Over the weekend, both the State Assembly and the State Senate passed the new bill. It is a small change that lawmakers say will have a big impact.

They voted to change the state’s property law stating, “a tenant should not include a squatter.” They are hoping it makes it easier for police to intervene in cases when someone enters a home without permission or legal paperwork instead of having to take them to housing court.

New York’s laws should have never included squatters in the first place. This is a welcome change to New Yorkers, especially with all of the illegal immigrants now living in the state thanks to Biden’s open border.

With all of this squatter madness going on, John Stossel did a report on a landlord in New York who found an innovative way to fight back against squatters and has even started a business helping other homeowners in other states deal with their squatters.
