Rick Dennison was fired today from his job as offensive line coach and run game coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings, after two season with the team and TWENTY-SEVEN years overall NFL coaching. His offense: he refused to accept a Covid-19 vaccine.
ESPN reports that “all tier 1 staff, including coaches, front-office executives, equipment managers and scouts,” are required to be vaccinated.
More:
In a memo released by the league this summer, the NFL said any unvaccinated Tier 1 staff member must provide a valid religious or medical reason for not receiving the vaccine. Losing Tier 1 status prohibits coaches from being on the field and in meeting rooms and having direct interactions with players.
The Vikings noted in their statement that Dennison does not have a vaccination exemption.
That statement says they are still talking to him about it. But for now, he’s been booted.
Outspoken evangelical Christian Tony Dungy, formerly an NFL player and coach, head coach of the Buccaneers and the Colts, who is now a sports analyst, had some valid responses to the apparent firing – or what may end up being temporary sidelining – of Dennison.
He first shared the story with a note that he’s curious how it will turn out, and wondering aloud whether there’s a league mandate or whether such firings are decided on a team by team basis.
I am very curious to see where this goes. Is this a league mandate or can individual teams handle it differently if staff members refuse to take the vaccine? https://t.co/oAUfpCp0AZ

After people responded, he responded to them.
Do we know the reason Rick Dennison gave for not taking the vaccine? If there are valid reasons that are acceptable, how do we know he didn’t have a valid reason?

I know Rick Dennison pretty well and I’m not so sure about that.

I totally agree with you. My question is, did the Minnesota Vikings decide this or did the NFL say he had to be fired? Both certainly have the right to determine who works for their organization but I’d like to know who is making this call.

I know the league is requiring the vaccine but what is the team remedy for refusal? Is it firing? Is it paid leave? Is it reassignment? Does league mandate say you are immediately fired?
— Tony Dungy (@TonyDungy) July 23, 2021
He then asked again about it being mandated from above or whether individual teams have some leeway in dealing with tier 1 employees that refuse the vaccine. I still didn’t see an answer. He asked another really very valid question.
I see the same thing just happened with an assistant coach with the Patriots. So I’m wondering if this is not a league decision?

Thank you but I wasn’t questioning you either. I truly want to know if teams are going to have any discretion in this or is the NFL saying that staff must be fired? If so, why are staff treated differently than players?
— Tony Dungy (@TonyDungy) July 23, 2021
That was exactly my point. There are certain staff people on some teams that you and I both know won’t be fired by the team for refusing the vaccine. What happens to them?

Meanwhile the NFL has announced this policy.
NFL teams will be forced to forefit if unvaccinated players cause COVID-19 outbreak https://t.co/Gtq5r8kFca pic.twitter.com/bTgcXMwpHy

They are definitely allowing players to be unvaccinated and then hyping a whole-team punishment (and no firings) in the extremely unlikely event of a team outbreak. So they created a policy that will probably never get tested but they can use to cover their butts? YOU DON’T SAY.
This from Dungy is a good summary of the nonsense double-standard.
I can understand that but will the OL coach have more close contacts than the starting center? Or can they not fire a player because of CBA rules? I would just like to know what the difference is between staff and players?

This is EXACTLY the question. If such muscle is needed for SCIENCE reasons with staff, why isn’t SCIENCE the same for big name players? For big name coaches, even?
Could it be that the NFL wants to have their cake and eat it too? Pander to the nannies but without hurting the big names necessary to their entire business model?
COULD IT BE THAT MAJOR ORGANIZATIONS, COMPANIES, STATE GOVERNMENTS AND FEDERAL AGENCIES ARE MAKING DECISIONS FOR REASONS OTHER THAN STRICT, UNBIASED, SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL REASONS?
Noooo waaaaaayyyyy!!!!!!
