The New York City council is demanding that Mayor Bill de Blasio remove a statue of Thomas Jefferson from City Hall:
NBC NY – Amid renewed nationwide calls to do away with statues on public property that have connections to slavery or other atrocities, New York City Council has one more they believe needs to come down.
Speaker Corey Johnson, along with other members of the council including the co-chairs of the Black, Latino and Asian caucus, wrote a letter Thursday to Mayor Bill de Blasio demanding a Thomas Jefferson statue be removed from City Hall.
“In the last few weeks, New Yorkers have called on all of us in elected office to make bold change so that communities of color feel heard, protected and represented … There are disturbing images of divisiveness and racism in our City that need to be revisited immediately. That starts with City Hall,” the letter from Johnson, Adrienne Adams, I. Daneek Miller, and fellow council members Deborah Rose and Inez D. Barron read.
“The statue of Thomas Jefferson in the City Council Chambers is inappropriate and serves as a constant reminder of the injustices that have plagued communities of color since the inception of our country. It must be removed,” the letter continues. “Jefferson is America’s most noted slave holder, a man who owned more than 600 Black women and men and a scholar who maintained that Blacks were inferior to whites.”
Just this morning Portland’s Antifa group tore down a statue of George Washington, America’s greatest president, and now the NY City Council wants the statue of Thomas Jefferson removed. They are judging by modern times the lives of these men, especially Thomas Jefferson, and the conflicted nature of those times with regard to slavery.
But I think what’s really happening is a revolution to try and change America from what it was and has been into something completely different, something completely socialist. These people with dark socialist or communist agendas want to claim that the America which was founded to protect individual liberty was so marred by slavery that it must be rebuilt from the ground up. It’s just an excuse to ‘transform’ America into some socialist utopia.
Sure, it starts with the toppling of statues of confederate soldiers. And then it moves to statues of America’s founders who had slaves as we are already seeing. At some point these revolutionaries will claim that the very Constitution which these founders wrote, these ‘slave owners’, is also marred by slavery and must be completely rewritten. And you can believe it won’t be much like the one we have now.
First they come for our statues. Then they come for our liberty.
