OF COURSE: Snopes defends AOC and her phony story about how she thought she was going to die at the hands of rioters

I’ve never seen Snopes read like a left-wing news site more so than in their latest defense of AOC and her harrowing but phony tale of how she was about to die at the hands of insurrectionists sent to find her by Ted Cruz.

Here’s how it starts:

In the aftermath of the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took to Instagram Live on Feb. 1, to relay her personal account of how the events of that day had traumatized her.

One theme covered in her retelling of those events was how her past experiences with trauma, particularly surviving sexual assault, had compounded her fear during and after the Capitol riot.

“I’m a survivor of sexual assault. And I haven’t told many people that in my life,” she said toward the beginning of her story. “But when we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other.”

Ocasio-Cortez also observed that it’s a painful fact for many survivors of trauma that they must deal with people who try to minimize what they experienced when they tell their stories, in an effort to silence them.

It took less than 48 hours for the right-wing disinformation machine to contrive a way to minimize what Ocasio-Cortez said she had experienced.

In a circus of cyberbullying that began on Feb. 3, 2021, conservative news outlets and social media conspiracy trolls latched on to the misleading claim that Ocasio-Cortez “wasn’t in the Capitol building” and therefore was not in harm’s way, as she had described in the Instagram video.

Examples included the RedState blog headline, “AOC Wasn’t Even in the Capitol Building During Her ‘Near Death’ Experience,” and the following tweet from the Daily Wire website:

“Right-wing disinformation machine” and “cyberbullying”?? Seriously Snopes, could you be any more left-wing???

The claim that Snopes was ‘debunking’ was this: “Did AOC Exaggerate the Danger She Was in During Capitol Riot?”

It’s obviously true, but they rated that claim as ‘mostly false’. ‘Mostly false’ because they had to admit that she was not in the Capitol building, which is the point everyone was making yesterday. You can read the rest here.

I think Matt Walsh sums up AOC’s exaggerated claim the best:

Exactly. That’s the bottom line. As I said yesterday, she’s clearly milking this for all she can in order to garner sympathy and to use it to attack Republicans.

Tom Elliot wrote this morning “Now that we know rioters were never near @AOC, re-watch her IG video from the days after; she claimed her life was flashing before her eyes as she thought death was near.”

Here’s that video:

She wasn’t in any imminent danger, yet she makes it sound like the mob was pounding down her door, saying she “had a pretty traumatizing event” happen to her and that she had “a very close encounter where she thought she was going to die.” A close encounter with a cop telling you to evacuate? C’mon. If that isn’t exaggeration, then I clearly don’t understand exaggeration.

And by the way, Snopes didn’t even mention how AOC lied about Ted Cruz when she told him “but you almost had me murdered 3 weeks ago.” That’s not even exaggeration, that’s completely false. But snopes can’t be bothered to do real fact-checks of their favorite politicians.

As Ben Shapiro notes…

UPDATE: I meant to throw this in the article. Despite her phony claims, Democrats are putting AOC at the front of the line today as they all blather about how they almost died at the hands of Trump supporters. This is clearly an effort to create more momentum to attack Republicans in the House and Senate who dared object:
