Opposition to Jim Jordan isn’t budging – – Here’s the latest on the speaker battle [UPDATE]

The twenty members who voted against Jim Jordan yesterday don’t appear to be relenting from their opposition. According to a report, they met yesterday after the vote and most aren’t budging:

It was also reported last night that there may be more ‘no’ votes today:

Because of the opposition to Jordan, there’s a movement to empower Patrick McHenry, the pro tem speaker, to lead the House:

Here’s a bit more from The Hill:

Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio), chair of the Republican Governance Group, hopes to make a move on Tuesday to empower Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.). The move comes as the GOP’s Speaker nominee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) faced opposition from 20 Republicans in a floor vote on Monday, and his allies publicly worry he could lose more support today.

“After two weeks without a Speaker of the House and no clear candidate with 217 votes in the Republican conference, it is time to look at other viable options. By empowering Patrick McHenry as Speaker Pro Tempore we can take care of our ally Israel until a new Speaker is elected,” Joyce said in a statement.

AND…

Many in the party are rallying behind efforts that would give McHenry more power to act as a temporary speaker, expanding a role otherwise appears to be largely dedicated to organizing the process of electing a new speaker.

Rep. Carlos Giménez (R-Fla.) – who has pledged to continue to vote for McCarthy for speaker – told reporters Tuesday that moves to further empower McHenry have gained momentum – “as they should.”

Even Newt Gingrich has gotten behind the McHenry solution:

There is supposed to be another speaker vote today at 11am, assuming that happens. They abruptly canceled the vote that was scheduled for last night. Jordan isn’t expected to win today, so we’ll see what happens with the McHenry solution.

UPDATE: Top Jordan ally says Jordan will lose more votes today…
