This morning John Bolton said he was back on Twitter and that he was going to explain the backstory on his Twitter silence:
Glad to be back on Twitter after more than two months. For the backstory, stay tuned……..

Later he tweeted that his Twitter account had been liberated…
We have now liberated the Twitter account, previously suppressed unfairly in the aftermath of my resignation as National Security Advisor. More to come…..

And lastly, at least so far, Bolton says the White House refused to allow him access to his Twitter account for fear of what he might say:
Re: speaking up — since resigning as National Security Advisor, the @WhiteHouse refused to return access to my personal Twitter account. Out of fear of what I may say? To those who speculated I went into hiding, I’m sorry to disappoint!
— John Bolton (@AmbJohnBolton) November 22, 2019
UPDATE: Bolton just added another tweet saying the White House never returned access to his Twitter account and he thanked Twitter for doing it:
In full disclosure, the @WhiteHouse never returned access to my Twitter account. Thank you to @twitter for standing by their community standards and rightfully returning control of my account.

Trump was asked about this early this morning when he called into Fox and Friends and he says nobody locked Bolton’s account:
Trump was asked on Fox if the administration locked Bolton out of his account. The president denied it, insisted he had a good relationship with Bolton. https://t.co/DQgogpzpDu

If you’ve followed this blog over the years, you know that I put a lot of stock into what Bolton says. And if he’s claiming the White House refused to return access to his Twitter account, I believe him.
Trump clearly wanted to control the narrative with respect to Bolton leaving in early September, so he came out that morning and said he fired Bolton. But Bolton quickly hit back using his Twitter account:
I offered to resign last night and President Trump said, "Let's talk about it tomorrow."
— John Bolton (@AmbJohnBolton) September 10, 2019
Notice after that tweet he started texting the media instead of using his Twitter account:
Ambassador Bolton sends me a text message just now: “Let’s be clear, I resigned, having offered to do so last night.”
— Robert Costa (@costareports) September 10, 2019
Ambassador Bolton to me just now: “I will have my say in due course. But I have given you the facts on the resignation. My sole concern is US national security.”
— Robert Costa (@costareports) September 10, 2019
I suspect he started texting the media because the White House locked him out of his Twitter account after his tweet disputing Trump’s statement. I know it’s circumstantial, but it does seem to fit his version of the facts.
