Pelosi WON’T let Republicans pass limits on Trump’s power of national emergency!

This is kinda bizarre – Pelosi is now refusing to help Republicans pass limitations on Trump over the national emergency!!

The Hill:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday that the House would not take up proposed Senate legislation to rein in national emergency powers, a bill put forward as part of an effort to give Republicans cover to side with President Trump on the border wall.

GOP senators are in talks with the White House about changing the National Emergencies Act, the 1976 law that Trump invoked to declare his national emergency to direct extra funding to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. That would give Senate Republicans uncomfortable with the national emergency room to avoid defying Trump.

Pelosi sought to make clear that wouldn’t fly with House Democrats, issuing her statement on the eve of the expected Senate vote on a resolution disapproving of Trump’s emergency declaration. The House passed that resolution late last month.

She says it’s because Republicans want to give themselves cover to let him have one national emergency:

“Republican Senators are proposing new legislation to allow the President to violate the Constitution just this once in order to give themselves cover,” Pelosi said in a statement. “The House will not take up this legislation to give President Trump a pass.”

I mean, yes, she’s right about that. But it would also be good for Congress to regain some of the power that they have stupidly given up to the executive in past decades. She’s trying to play hardball when Republicans already are in a bad position to force Trump to sign their bill. I’m guessing that means this bill is dead dead dead. But Republicans just don’t have the political will to stop Trump on his first national emergency declaration.

  1. The only reason she won’t do this, in my opinion, is because she foresee’s a future Democrat President and does not want to place any limits on their power because The Dems may not have congress under a Dem President, to remove any restraints that are put in place now.
    .
Man, that’s a long run on sentence.

    1. I thought of that same scenario myself. There is also the possibility that she could also be freaking out over the eventual declassification of incriminating documents that are supposed to be released, post Mueller report.

  2. No Nancy, but you’re always WRONG so no one is surprised here.

EVERY President has the authority to declare a National Emergency, including your boy Obama, who DID, by the way.

No, you just want to slow-roll the House of Representatives and continue to advance the FALSE narrative that Trump is “violating the Constitution.” Ironically, that’s the SAME Constitution that you liberals LOATHE, especially when it stops you from implementing destructive liberal policies.

After all, you only embrace “Federalism” when it comes to a decision like Woe V Wade, but suddenly you libs REJECT Federalism when it comes to “Sanctuary cities” that are in violation of Federal Laws.

About the only part of Pelosi’s statement that’s mostly true is that the new legislation is meant to “give President Trump a pass.”

But no, Trump is not violating the Constitution. Neither is this the first national emergency that Trump has declared. He has already renewed the 28 existing national emergencies that he inherited from previous administrations, and declared three new ones. That should make it clear just how routine it is, and has been for a long time, for a president to declare a national emergency.

And while Congress has certainly given up way too much power to the executive branch, this is not really a good example of that. A much better example is the way Congress has created federal agencies, and given the bureaucrats in those agencies the power to issue regulations which they then also enforce.

It’s been recognized for a very long time that the executive needs the ability to deal with emergency situations directly, and that a legislature by its nature is just not equipped to do so. John Locke talked about that topic, and pretty much all the founding fathers agreed with his position.

    1. You’re right about that, but what Stretch fails to understand is while the National Emergencies Act of 1976 gives the Executive branch broad powers on declarations of same, it does NOT allow for a President to change the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

  4. Democrats don’t care about the Constitution, they don’t care about what they declared a humanitarian crisis at the border in November (intentionally made it worse in the budget just passed), they don’t care about drug cartels profiting off of inflicting pain on the American people (drugs, sex trafficking, etc.), they don’t care about terrorists taking root in America, they don’t care about illegal immigrants overrunning our country, and they don’t care about the executive branch accumulating more power, so this is purely political, and they’d never get away with it if we had fair and responsible media.

    1. Yup. ALL the Democrats care about is this; 3 out of 4 immigrants vote Democrat.

Nothing else matters to them. Not crime, not crisis, not a thing.

They are not impacted by the influx of illegal immigrants. Sadly though, RiNO’s don’t seem to care either.

  5. Meanwhile thousands of illegals are crossing our borders. And will be voting illegally in the next election for president. This is not good, folks.

  6. Exactly why is Trump’s emergency declaration, a violation of the constitution when previous presidents have used this executive privilege a bunch of times before??
The idea that Democratic president in the future could use the emergency declaration to take away our guns is not valid because of the second amendment.

  7. The left already said that if Trump’s National Emergency is allowed to go forward, when the Dems. win back the WH, they will use a National Emergency to take all of your guns away. San Fran Nan doesn’t want to remove that ability from the next Dem. pres., which they are certain is going to happen in 2020. With ballot harvesting, they just may get their “by hook or by crock.” Mostly crook.

    1. Yes, but the Dims and especially Stretch Pelosi doesn’t understand that the National Emergencies Act of 1976 does NOT allow for a President to change the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

Trump can declare anything he wants a “National Emergency,” just as Obama could and DID 12 TIMES for the record.

  8. Pelois is just throwing a tantrum because she knows that if a Dem wins next election or the election after that, that president would also be limited. You can bet that because Trump did this, when the Dems get power again, virtually every one of their agenda items will become some kind of “emergency” so they can get their socialistic programs instituted.

  9. For the upteenth time Nancy! Trump isn’t violating the constitution. He’s upholding the oath he swore by and is protecting the nation. Something you and the rest of congress refuse to do.

  10. As I said previously when Trump tweeted a nice tweet about Pelosi, she’s bad, rotten. They are not friends. She will waffle stomp him in a heartbeat if she could.

    1. That’s why I opposed Trump during the primaries. I knew he’d get rolled by lyin’ Ryan and McCONnell.

Trump had the majority of BOTH Houses and could have put pressure on McCONnell and Ryan THEN. Heck, he could have even traded the border wall funding for a RiNO plan. Instead, he lazily and foolishly did NOTHING about it.

And I fully REJECT the “bu… but… Trump couldn’t work with them” bologna. He sure as heck had a MUCH BETTER chance at getting funding for the border wall with Republicans than with the Democrat majority, but only after the November 2016 elections did he finally decide to fight. 🙁

  11. The real reason is she believes that a Democrat will win in 2020 and doesn’t want to stop her side from doing the same thing.

  12. It’s because it would limit the next Democrat. I’m not surprised by her statement, and I don’t buy her excuse.

  13. But it would also be good for Congress to regain some of the power that they have stupidly given up to the executive in past decades.

Yeah. Except it seems such actions are only merited when a Republican is president and never when a Democrat sits there.

It is strange Pelosi has said this.

    /me thinks its a trap.

      1. AT is a bored super-villain eating popcorn. What are you supposed to be, Gadbous?

(You didn’t think that the Joker was Dracula, did you…?)

        1. Nope, you’re overthinking it. Hint: it’s not supposed to be anything other than what you described.

    1. Yea, because everyone needs to see you in an animated form. There is a very good reason you have right now 155 down arrows. Shouldn’t that be a hint to you AT?
