POLL: Is it time for a new commenting system?

As some of you have seen lately, DISQUS has been having problems.

For some reason the comments just completely disappear and then later re-appear, and it’s been going on for a couple of weeks now. They may fix it eventually, who knows…but I’m really starting to wonder.

It’s been suggested that we change to a new commenting system because DISQUS seems to be getting worse. So now I’ve created a poll for you to weigh in:

There are pluses and minuses to switching commenting systems. But the biggest issue to me is what you want.

I haven’t researched it in a while but I know there are several other good commenting systems out there. Fox News uses Spot IM, for example. I’ve used Livefyre in the past. If you want me to switch and have a suggestion of one you’d like me use, let me know in the comments below.

Ok, let the voting begin!

Hey Scoop, I’d like to point out that most of these Disqus problems (which are minor annoyances at best) – it seems like it happens mainly at TRS. I rarely see the same issue at other sites that I frequent. Makes me wonder if there’s something wonky in the coding.

I can’t see the button for voting.

And also, my posts never seem to be as witty after I sober up. Can DISQUS fix that?

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I haven’t noticed any problems with DISQUS and I’m sure whatever is going on will be worked out. The only problem I can remember ever having with DISQUS happened several years ago, and I believe it was also a case of disappearing posts. It got resolved in about a day.

Keep DISQUS, communicate with DISCUS, and be patient as they work through their changes and growing pains. Have any commenters here reported the problems they’re experiencing directly to DISCUS?

I’ve used dozens of other comment section programs. Other than Facebook, Disqus is the best, even with the glitches. ALL of the others are clunky, slow, and make following a thread almost impossible.

If you use twitter or facebook, you will lose me because I don’t go there.

13.35% don’t comment and don’t care. But they read the article and took the poll. Veddy eenteresting, as Arte Johnson used to say.

Disqus censors me sometimes even though I don’t threaten anyone or cuss. Why is that? Switch to someone who won’t censor free speech.

Keep Disqus. Sure we have glitches, but so do the alternatives.

You will Lose a Lot of Comments / Commenters if your replacement is Facebook or Facebook login controlled.

I use a few anti-virus tools on my desktop that block Disqus on this site but no other Disqus-using sites. Weird.

The only way I can access comments here is via iPad. Please change.

Attention moderators,

The issues with Disqus have been experienced by me and others at several different sites.

I have even gone to random sites that I have never been to before that used Disqus and even they had the issue.

Scoop, K-Bob, Gino,
Has anyone had contact with Disqus??? Are they even aware that there is an issue?

Scoop, if you want to change commenting system. that’s certainly up to you. I haven’t had a problem with Disqus in a long time, and when I did it was on my end (settings and such). I’m good either way as long, as some have said, I don’t have to use Facebook to log into it.

I’m not experiencing the problems some are having with Disqus. I voted to keep it but I’m fine with anything that works as long as I’m not forced to login with Facebook or Twitter or the like.

I voted to change. However, I’d like to stay with Disqus because I know how it works.

I have big issues with Disqus that didn’t exist back in 2016. I have to reload to update the comments. I can’t see when someone has replied to me on TRS site. Etc.

I’m wondering if it’s my own browser. I used Windows 10 (abomination) and have many other issues on many other sites. MS forces me to use Edge which I override with DuckDuckGo. Pretty sure, that causes problems too.

I’m wondering how much of the Disqus issues are a result of other issues, like Windows 10 and Edge? Perhaps, it’s worth someone exploring that.

The reload button could be contributing to issues? I’ve seen many times when I upvote someone it disappear after reloading.
Idk. Bobs suspicion of ads probably is the culprit.

Oddly enough, this article on TRS is the page with the most Disqus errors.

I’m betting one or more ads being served are causing the problem. I’ve had no trouble on other threads today. But several times on this one.

The poll and my comments just disappeared, grrr. I don’t get it, I use disgust at other sites and it works fine . Do what you think is best Scoop.

I’m fine with Disqus, mainly because I’ve had no problems with it.

Just please not Facebook for commenting. I’d rather make no comments than use Facebook.

(Wait, did I just announce how to get rid of me?)

If it doesn’t work, you must

get rid of it and find a synonym for “get rid of it” that rhymes with “work.”

I’ll be happy whatever you decide. But most of the time I am quite happy with Disqus. It’s like my hubby – he’s got a few flaws but I think I’ll keep him anyway. After all, he puts up with me.

Disqus has its problems but a number of conservative sites use it (Daily Wire, PJ Media, The Other McCain), so I would be opposed to moving away from it unless there’s something very obviously better out there, which I’m not finding. I’ve got over 45K comments and over 105K upvotes in Disqus, after all.

I would stick with Disqus. It has its problems but some of the other systems I have seen are far worse.

Just one man’s opinion.

I’m thinking changing from Disqus would wind up being like changing Insurance
companies because of a rate increase. You look around, find an insurance company
that is cheaper, sign up and before you know it, they increase your premiums the next year.

Stay with Disqus and work on the problem. My two cents.

It has been really horrible lately, the only way i can see comments is to sort it by the Best comments and i usually start from newest…How many people know that the toggle fixes the issue of no comments though or wants to bother with that? I would say go with something else but not facebook.

I do not have any complaints with Disqus. The nice thing about it is many other sites use the same thing, so it can be used across multiple news sites.

Disqus seems to have real issues on the big, live stories, like election nite, debate nite, etc. This is a new/different issue for them lately, w/ whole comment sections disappearing. Is there some way Scoop, that TRS, as a consumer, can go to them and urge them to get it together? I ask because I like some of the other disqus channels, so it’s nice for connectivity.

So… I just came down here to comments and see there are 192 comments made. But displayed, I only see one. The only hesitation I have about losing Disqus is that my numbers (stats) of posts/likes will likely be erased and all the animals I’ve blocked will be free again to rape and pillage. Starting over is a drag. But having to exit out of TRS, then log back in to comment (nearly EVERY TIME now) is getting VERY tiresome.

I change my vote to dump Disqus.
