Report: Rick Perry to drop out today

CNN is reporting that Perry will announce he is dropping out of the race today and he’ll announce it before the CNN debate tonight:

CNN – Rick Perry is telling supporters that he will drop his bid Thursday for the Republican presidential nomination, two sources familiar with his plans told CNN.

The Texas governor will make the announcement before the CNN debate in South Carolina, the sources said.

Also, I’m now seeing reports on twitter that Perry will endorse Gingrich and is holding a press conference at 11AM this morning.

As much as I love the governor, he never once gained traction after he first stepped in and led the polls. I thought his exit was inevitable after South Carolina if he had another bad showing, so I’m a bit surprised that he’s already bowing out. I guess his internal polls match the rest that still show him at the bottom of the pack.

That said, I appreciate this move from him as I believe it will only help focus the conservative vote and give us a better chance of defeating Romney.
