Trump judicial pick Lawrence VanDyke broke down in tears today after being asked about accusations made by the American Bar Association that he would not commit to treating those in the LGBT community fairly.
Watch:
In the clip above, Sen. Josh Hawley questions VanDyke about this clearly ‘political’ letter from the American Bar Association that accuses him of all manner of ineptitude and also suggests he would discriminate against members of the LGBT community.
Hawley’s point was to prove just how political the letter was, noting that the person that the ABA allowed to interview VanDyke was a woman who supported his political opponent when he ran for the Supreme Court in Montana back in 2014. Hawley said that he found that “absolutely unbelievable”.
It was when Hawley asked VanDyke about the accusation of potential discrimination of those in the LGBT community that VanDyke broke down in tears, saying that he never said what the letter accused him of saying and he believes everyone is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.
Hawley, disgusted by the clearly political nature of the letter, said that he would never consider the opinion of the ABA in the future and that he would ask the White House to stop allowing the ABA to have special access to his judicial nominees.
