Speaker McCarthy to consider expunging Trump’s impeachments

It’s being reported this morning that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said he will consider expunging Trump’s impeachments.

This is in response to a group of Republicans who want to bring forward legislation to make this happen.

Here’s the report from The Hill:

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on Thursday that he would consider expunging one or both of former President Trump’s impeachments.

“I would understand why members would want to bring that forward,” McCarthy said in response to a question at a press conference on Thursday, before listing off several other key priorities for House Republicans.

“But I understand why individuals want to do it, and we’d look at it,” he added.

In the last Congress, a group of more than 30 House Republicans led by Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) put forward a resolution to expunge Trump’s impeachment in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The resolution was supported by the fourth-ranking Republican in the House, Republican Conference Chairman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.).

Ok I’ll admit that ‘we’d look at it’ isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, but hopefully he’ll truly consider it because this would be awesome.

The question becomes how many Republicans in the House would support it, especially with such a small majority.

In related news Paul Ryan dissed Trump pretty hard yesterday, calling him a ‘proven loser’:

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said on Thursday that former President Trump is a “proven loser” after a string of Republican election losses in recent years.

“He’s fading fast,” Ryan told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday. “He is a proven loser. He cost us the House in ’18, he cost us the White House in ’20, he cost us the Senate again and again.”

Ryan said he does not believe Trump will get the party nomination as Republicans begin to focus more on issues like fiscal responsibility and less on personalities.

“I think we are moving past Trump,” he added. “I really think that’s the case. I can’t imagine him getting the nomination, frankly.”

Yikes. I’m sure Trump will be responding to this today on his Truth account.
