Late last night Governor Greg Abbott explained to 2020 candidate Pete Buttigieg why America is both the greatest and most exceptional nation in the world:
Dear Mayor Pete: America is the greatest nation in history of the world. Are there imperfections? Sure. Is there a more exceptional country? No. It allows both a paraplegic to rise to Governor of TX & a gay man to run for President. Opportunity for all. https://t.co/6dbER1PQh3

What Abbott is referring to is Buttigieg’s message from last week that “America is not as great as advertised”.
Democrats love to hate on America when running for president. They love to point to slavery and the era of segregation as if these are fatal flaws in our country’s DNA.
But I like much more the perspective from Abbott, whose argument regarding “opportunity for all” doesn’t ignore slavery and segregation, but views them as imperfections in the rear-view mirror that America has overcome.
And of course he points to the obvious fact as evidence that even a gay man, who is clearly a minority in this country, can run for president just as a paraplegic can become governor.
