There Is Much To Remember On Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend. That wonderful weekend The unofficial start of summer. Pools open, boats hit the water, grills fire up and burgers, hot dogs and potato salad invade backyards across this great land.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with some charcoal and fun in the sun. I hope everyone has great weather and great friends and family to share these memories with. I intend to. I also intend to take some time to remember, to thank, and to fly a flag for those who fought or gave their lives. They walked that wall and stood watch until God relieved them of duty. All gave some and some gave all in order to protect the very principles this country was founded upon. From the Boston tea party and driving back the Red coats, to taking the beaches at Normandy, to the harsh terrain of Iraq and Afghanistan. And we still continue to fight for those freedoms, right here on our very shores.

This year, Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Jim Jordan have been fighting for our second amendment rights. Yes, second. It seems to me if the founding fathers made it the second, it’s pretty important. As stated by Sen. Rubio in the Washington Post:

“In order to achieve the American Dream, people need to be able to live in safe communities and be able to protect themselves, their families and their properties from danger,” Rubio said. “For years, the District of Columbia has infringed on its residents’ Second Amendment rights and rendered them vulnerable to criminals who could care less what the gun laws are.”

Our own government has tried to take away and infringe on our amendment rights. The rights and freedoms that so many men and women have sworn to give life and limb to secure. And yes, whether the liberals or the democrats like it, yes, the Second Amendment is one of those things our troops fought for.

Freedom is not just about the “right” to chose between Coke or Pepsi, mac salad or potato salad. It’s about not giving in or giving up on our constitutionally promised liberties.

Remembering those who have shed their blood to guarantee I have the freedom of speech or the right to bear arms, the right to vote or to vote you out. Our government may not want to forget that last one. Because they can, will be, and have been voted out.

Today, remember that. Remember your liberty and also your duty. Remember your freedom and also your responsibility.

And do not forget to whisper, shout or pray a “Thank you” to those gone but never forgotten. We honor them. And inspired by them, like them, we must never give up. Not ever.
