Trump threatens to close the border if Democrats don’t fund the wall

Trump tweeted new threats this morning amid the partial government shutdown, saying we either build the wall or we close the border.

Here’s his tweets:

We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with. Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!

….The United States looses soooo much money on Trade with Mexico under NAFTA, over 75 Billion Dollars a year (not including Drug Money which would be many times that amount), that I would consider closing the Southern Border a “profit making operation.” We build a Wall or…..

…..close the Southern Border. Bring our car industry back into the United States where it belongs. Go back to pre-NAFTA, before so many of our companies and jobs were so foolishly sent to Mexico. Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border……

…..Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are doing nothing for the United States but taking our money. Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it. We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries – taking advantage of U.S. for years!

You know at this point I must say I don’t believe Trump will follow through on closing the border over wall funding. I honestly think he’s just trying to scare the Democrats into blinking first.

It’s one thing to close the border when we have hostile migrants on the other side trying to invade our country. It’s another to just close it because Congress won’t fund the border and change the laws. Many people cross the border legally every day for work and I don’t think Trump is willing to go that far.

So no, I really don’t think Trump is serious here.

I’d rather Trump exhaust the government shutdown and then, if Democrats don’t budge, just finish building the wall (legally, of course) through other funding to which he has access. It’s not the best solution but considering that securing our border is a matter of national security, it’s one I think the American people would say is a-okay.
