UGH: Merriam-Webster changes the definition of “they” to accommodate the non-binary crowd

Merriam-Webster is accommodating the gender diversity crowd and have now changed the definition of the word ‘they’:

They: expanded to include this sense: “used to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary.” It’s an expansion of a use that is sometimes called the “singular they” (and one that has a long history in English). When a reflexive pronoun corresponding to singular use of they is needed, themself is seeing increasing use.

So the pronoun ‘they’ can be singular now??

I guess MW didn’t really want to create new singular pronouns out of thin air; and non-binaries must not want to be referred to as ‘it’.

So Merriam-Webster rushes in and saves the day and makes ‘they’ a singular pronoun. Welcome to our new LGBT world.

Ugh.
