This morning Speaker Johnson was on CNBC explaining his ‘innovative’ two-stop CR, which he says is changing the way Washington works.
He even tweeted it out:
The two-step CR achieves the critical goal of avoiding a disastrous Christmas omnibus spending package.

At the end of the clip Johnson claims that if we don’t prevent the shutdown with this laddered CR, it would do even more harm to the economy.
That is not winning over conservative critics at all:
Bonchie points out that this CR is nothing but a clean CR like what McCarthy did:
Love this guy's conviction on most issues, but it's just a clean CR. It's exactly what we were told was so terrible that the last guy had to be booted. https://t.co/450vEfMkMR

Daniel Horowitz says Johnson is caving to Democrats and that is the problem:
Dude, the disaster of pre-Christmas omnibus is not about the timing or the structure of the packaging of the bill. Its what is IN it!!! Doesn't matter when you cave to Dems. Its the cave that is the problem. https://t.co/nvx8pLkzXT

So he publicly proclaims that everything must be done to prevent a government shutdown and that a shutdown would be even worse for the economy than allowing the border invasion and $1 trillion+ interest on debt to continue. That is it. He’s done. You have zero leverage after that. What does he think will change next year when the House passes the aprops bills? You have to agree with Dems otherwise there might be a gov’t shutdown, which, in the words of the speaker, is worse than anything else.
To make the point, one key Democrat is calling this CR “a very big win”:
And Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal calls it “a very big win” that the CR bill is at FY23 funding levels.

On a different note, Tom Elliott called Johnson a huge disappointment after he went all in on Trump 2024:
.@SpeakerJohnson is a huge disappointment. His first priorities: funding Israel, funding Ukraine, funding Washington. Nothing for Americans. And if he wants to ensure Biden’s a one-term president, he shouldn’t want to nominate the only guy Biden’s proven he can beat. I see no… https://t.co/NVXgITumq4

@SpeakerJohnson is a huge disappointment. His first priorities: funding Israel, funding Ukraine, funding Washington. Nothing for Americans. And if he wants to ensure Biden’s a one-term president, he shouldn’t want to nominate the only guy Biden’s proven he can beat. I see no major differences btwn him & McCarthy, @mattgaetz
Johnson isn’t winning any awards right now, but Matt Gaetz is happy right?
