It’s one thing for Putin to defend Assad by suggesting the rebels are using chemical weapons to make Assad look guilty. But now he’s taken that even further, stating that the US itself is planning on planting fake chemical weapons in order to frame Assad:
REUTERS – President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia had information that the United States was planning to launch new missile strikes on Syria, and that there were plans to fake chemicals weapons attacks there.
When asked whether he expected more U.S. missile strikes on Syria, he said:
“We have information that a similar provocation is being prepared … in other parts of Syria including in the southern Damascus suburbs where they are planning to again plant some substance and accuse the Syrian authorities of using (chemical weapons).”
That’s a pretty incredible statement. Perhaps Putin is just attacking the US for the report that came out yesterday suggesting he knew and tried to cover up the Assad chemical attack.
In related news, Putin is pushing the UN to investigate the chemical attack:
President Vladimir Putin says Russia will appeal to the United Nations to investigate last week’s chemical attack in Syria.
Moscow has dismissed suggestions that the Syrian government that it backs could be behind the attack in Idlib province.
Putin told reporters on Tuesday that Russia would appeal to a U.N. agency in the Hague, urging it to hold an official probe.
Russia has defended Bashar Assad’s government which has been accused of launching a chemical weapons attack on the Idlib province.
