United Airlines has just announced an affirmative action plan to make 50% of their pilots “women or people of color”:
Our flight deck should reflect the diverse group of people on board our planes every day. That’s why we plan for 50% of the 5,000 pilots we train in the next decade to be women or people of color. Learn more and apply now: https://t.co/VbOFvFOksB pic.twitter.com/r0ScH6MQAJ

This is absurd! For pilots flying hundreds of passengers at altitudes as high as 30,000 feet, one would think merit would be the key qualification. But according to United Airlines, ‘diversity’ is now more important.
Ryan Girdusky points out that they are doing this after receiving a big fat bailout during the pandemic, and this amounts to nothing more than discrimination against white men:
United got a $5 billion dollar bailout last year… what’s the first things they did:
– laid off or cut the hours for over 15,000 employees
– discriminate against white men https://t.co/K40Q4Hn2Rd— Ryan James Girdusky (@RyanGirdusky) April 7, 2021
He’s exactly right. And what this quota driven diversity madness will potentially do is water down the skill set of their pilots, which is not the message you want to send customers who are already forking out big money to take these trips.
If I’m going to risk my life and fly 30k feet in the air, I want to know that my pilot was hired because of their impeccable skills, not because of their gender or the color of their skin.
Here’s a few more reactions to this announcement:
Yeaaaa when I'm 31,000 feet in the air, I'm not really gonna find comfort in knowing that my pilot was an affirmative action hire.

Unbelievably, no major airline has ever hired a member of the blind community to pilot one of their aircraft. Will you be the first to break this glass ceiling once and for all? Anti-blind bigotry has no place in the airline industry or anywhere else in society!

Affirmative action pilot over the intercom: “The plane is going down. Brace for impact.”
Passengers: “We are grateful to die for the sake of diversity!”

I just want to make sure I have pilots who can fly. I can assure you that’s all I care about. https://t.co/eRbVMl9Q3e
