Yesterday we told you about a movement among Senate Republicans to stop Trump’s new tariffs against Mexico if they go into effect next year.
But today an unlikely Senate Republican has come out defending Trump’s tariffs against Mexico, suggesting Trump doesn’t really have a choice to get Mexico to secure it’s southern border:
I don’t generally like tariffs either. But what alternative do my GOP colleagues have to get #Mexico to secure its southern border, use the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to screen northbound rail cars & vehicles & act on intel we provide on human traffickers? https://t.co/9qNiRN4Mek

I assure you every effort has been made to get more cooperation from Mexican government. And generally President Obrador’s administration is friendly & cooperative. But it is frustrating to see how this migrant crisis has been accelerated by their well intentioned polices 2/3

I respect President Obrador view that migration is a basic human right. No nation admits more immigrants than we do. Each year over 1 million immigrants become permanent legal residents of the U.S. But it’s not unreasonable to ask it to be via an orderly & manageable process 3/3

Rubio even admits he’s not fond of tariffs but realizes their usefulness to try and get Mexico to stop the flow of illegals to our southern border.
And it’s apparently working, as the New York Times reports that Mexico has started cracking down on migrants. Also if you remember today is the day that Mexico is meeting with Pompeo and others to discuss this tariff situation.
