Daniel Penny sat down for an interview with Judge Jeanine on Fox News and explained his mindset on what happened on the subway and how he feels about everything now that it’s over.
I must say I was a bit shocked by his answer, at least in the aftermath of this, but it tells me his character is that of a truly humble and caring person:

Just hearing Penny’s answer again leaves me with a profound sense of awe of the man. He knew he could protect them and that’s exactly why he did it. He sincerely wanted to keep anyone from getting hurt and it really sounds like to me that he’d do it again if faced with a similar situation.
Daniel Penny is an absolute hero. 100%.
