Today Newt Gingrich went into hostile territory with the ladies of The View today and clashed with them on Trump’s remarks in 2017 regarding Charlottesville:
I thought Newt did a pretty good job, but I would have liked it more if he’d tackled Whoopi’s characterization more directly.
While I don’t think she’s entirely wrong, the legitimate protesters weren’t there to protest the white nationalists and Nazis. They were there to protest the taking down of the Robert E. Lee statue. And who is to say that those people had anything to do with the violence that ensued when Antifa and the Nazis started battling.
But the big point is that Trump was separating the two, and he did so several times even though the press insists that he was talking about the Nazis and Antifa.
Toward the end of the segment, Newt makes clear that he’s not arguing that Trump handled it perfectly, as Trump said the other day. He readily admits Trump rarely does anything perfectly because many times he gets into his own way.
