Sheila Jackson-Lee described to the press this morning what she said was an AR-15 that she held in her hands. But it sounds nothing like an actual AR-15:
“I held an AR-15 in my hand, I wish I hadn’t. It is as heavy as 10 boxes that you might be moving. And the bullet that is utilized, a .50 caliber, these kinds of bullets need to be licensed and do not need to be on the street.” – Rep. @JacksonLeeTX18 pic.twitter.com/U71ir6BHZH

Jackson-Lee claims the AR-15 that she held was as heavy as 10 boxes. Maybe if they were 10 boxes of kleenex. An average AR-15 weighs around 6-7 pounds. They are actually very lightweight and feel good in the hand.
She also claimed they fire .50 caliber bullets, but that’s not true either. AR-15s fire a .223 caliber bullet. Lemme show you what that looks like against a .50 caliber, via Pew Pew Tactical:
The .223 is the fifth one from the left. And the big one on the end, that’s the .50 caliber. There’s no way that will fit into an AR-15.
Maybe what SJL held in her hands was the AR-50, which will shoot a .50 caliber round and weighs about 35 pounds. And it looks like this:
That’s a huge gun and also has a huge price tag at over $3,300 bucks. It’s also not a gun that you fire like a traditional rifle because it’s just too big.
I don’t know the restrictions on buying these type of guns, if there are any, but they are clearly very different than an AR-15 and Sheila Jackson-Lee really needs to learn the difference, especially since she’s a legislator. Because right now she sounds like an idiot.
