President Trump explained to Republicans face to face this morning, during their breakfast together, why he wants them to end the filibuster and reopen the government.
Here’s what he said:
I did like that, during this appeal, Trump wasn’t making this some kind of red line, that he said he’d go with whatever they decided since they were ‘smart people’.
I think, at the end of the day, Republicans won’t end the filibuster. But he isn’t wrong about the Democrats. They tried to end it before and had two members that wouldn’t allow it. If they win next year in the midterms, they’ll definitely try and do it again. And Trump will be there saying ‘I told you so’ if they end up doing it.
But at the same time, remember that the filibuster is the only thing that saved the country from radical laws Democrats were trying to pass. We were so thankful at the time for the filibuster and the two Democrats who wouldn’t allow Democrats to tear it down. That was a huge deal and I’d hate to see Republicans get rid of it, only for it to backfire like it could have during the Biden years.
