WATCH: Trump RESPONDS to allegations he asked Whitaker to change US Attorney over Cohen’s case

The New York Times wrote a story today accusing Trump of trying to get his Acting AG to replace the US attorney in charge of Cohen’s case:

Mr. Trump called Matthew G. Whitaker, his newly installed attorney general, with a question. He asked whether Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York and a Trump ally, could be put in charge of the widening investigation, according to several American officials with direct knowledge of the call.

Mr. Whitaker, who had privately told associates that part of his role at the Justice Department was to “jump on a grenade” for the president, knew he could not put Mr. Berman in charge because Mr. Berman had already recused himself from the investigation. The president soon soured on Mr. Whitaker, as he often does with his aides, and complained about his inability to pull levers at the Justice Department that could make the president’s many legal problems go away.

Trump was just asked about it in his brief Q&A with reporters:

Trump’s response was “No, not at all. I don’t know who gave you that. That’s more fake news. There’s a lot of fake news out there. No I didn’t.”

He was then asked about his relationship with Whitaker and he had nothing but nice things to say about Whitaker.

Reading the NY Times accusation sounds true enough. They say it’s based on multiple officials with direct knowledge of the call. But then don’t these accusations always sound like they’re true when you read them in print like this?

Trump has denied accusations like this in the past and then been vindicated later when the truth came out.

And this is why I chose not to run this story to begin with when I saw it plastered all over CNN. I just don’t believe them anymore. They are too interested in creating scandal around Trump that will dominate the news cycle for a few days.

  1. Cohen offers no exposure of criminal liability to PDJT–Mulehead’s non-crime plea deal with Cohen and Cohen/s self-serving “composing” notwithstanding. So, why would PDJT care who handled the case? Makes no sense, IMO.

  2. Technically, it’s completely within Trump’s power to replace an attorney overseeing a case with one he trusts more. As it should be. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to remove an attorney who was clearly incompetent or partisan. Needless to say, we would expect such decisions to be done with the advice of senior DOJ people, but the authority is the president’s.

Of course, Congress would then have the power to move to impeach him if they thought they had evidence it was done for corrupt reasons. But they would need some kind of actual evidence. Just exercising leadership over attorneys would not in itself be illegal, or proof of illegal motive.

The real obstacle to doing something like that is the politics, which is why I doubt there’s any truth to it. Why would a president open himself up to those kinds of political smears if he doesn’t have to?

But ultimately, the DOJ answers to the president. They are not above the president. In the exact same way that the nominally-independent Special Counsel is under the authority of the AG, the AG and all US attorneys are under the authority of the president. Not the other way around.

  3. “And this is why I chose not to run this story to begin with when I saw it plastered all over CNN. I just don’t believe them anymore. They are too interested in creating scandal around Trump that will dominate the news cycle for a few days.” And then you posted it anyway with the …..it sounds true enough….

  4. “according to several American officials with direct knowledge of the call“.

Yeah, well when those several American officials with direct knowledge of the call decide to step forward, we can have another conversation.

  5. NYT is only interested in leaving a trail of lies, innuendo, smears and slurs in the public record about Trump. They don’t care about printing the truth.

They hope a historian will showcase what they print them 50 years from now from this national paper or record, besmirching Trump forever long after we are all gone.

No one will bother to learn the truth as history unfolds, unless we are all dead in 12 more years..

  6. Specifically crafted stories are spead around the top levels of government to see when and to whom they are leaked. The people given these stories are suspected leakers. This is how they are trying to root them out.

Then there are lying glory hogs in the media who claim all sorts of information from anonymous sources. All to get a story with their byline to go viral. These days, Clicks = Job Security.

Between those two factors, the only smart position to take on stories like this is to assume it’s a complete fabrication, then wait and see if it gets corroborated somehow before registering your hot take.

Even then, it takes a firm committment to the truth, and a rejection of idolatry to keep from being sucked into factionalism.

You’ll notice Scoop and Sooper are always careful to avoid declarations without qualifiers. “If this is true,” being the most common.

  7. [Trump] asked whether Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York and a Trump ally, could be put in charge of the widening investigation, according to several American officials with direct knowledge of the call.

THE OUTRAGE! It’s like Trump thinks he’s the president or something!

  8. Let’s say POTUS did ask the question…… so what? It’s not a crime to ask a question, also it seems that Whitaker rebuffed him & he moved on from the subject?
I don’t really see the issue.

  9. Tromp signed the Space Force law or whatever it’s called today. It must be a waste of money, because I don’t hear the Democrats raising cain.

  10. cnn and all their other crony fake news outlets, will take any here say and run with it. They do not care if it’s true or not.

  11. I’ve never in my lifetime seen a President attacked 24/7 like Pres.Trump is.

Not even Pres. Bush was attacked like Trump is.

I’ve never seen another President get a free pass on every issue and hatred for our Country as Barack Husein Obama did and still does. The pathetic media worship him and his band of thugs.

  12. This time they got him! The end of Drumpf!
What’s with the whole Cohen story anyway? Wasn’t he supposed to spill the beans on the collusion?
