What do Joe the Plumber and Miss California Have in Common?

joe_the_plumberGood ol’ Joe.  You have to give him credit for saying what he means and meaning what he says.  He doesn’t pull any punches and certainly doesn’t dance around political correctness.  In fact these are the qualities I look for in a politician, which is ironic because he’ll probably never be one with these qualities.

But that’s what makes him great.  You can’t be loved by everyone (politically speaking), and if you are then you are probably not saying something that you really believe.  Which brings me to Joe’s interview with Christianity Today – in fact more specifically one question from that interview:

In the last month, same-sex marriage has become legal in Iowa and Vermont. What do you think about same-sex marriage at a state level?

At a state level, it’s up to them. I don’t want it to be a federal thing. I personally still think it’s wrong. People don’t understand the dictionary—it’s called queer. Queer means strange and unusual. It’s not like a slur, like you would call a white person a honky or something like that. You know, God is pretty explicit in what we’re supposed to do—what man and woman are for. Now, at the same time, we’re supposed to love everybody and accept people, and preach against the sins. I’ve had some friends that are actually homosexual. And, I mean, they know where I stand, and they know that I wouldn’t have them anywhere near my children. But at the same time, they’re people, and they’re going to do their thing.

Can you imagine if Carrie Prejean had said that? The truth is it wouldn’t have mattered. Whether you say “I believe marriage carrie_prejeanshould be between a man and a woman” or what Joe said above, I believe it would yield the same result.  Do you remember the response to the passage of Prop 8 in California?  The outrage in the Gay community manifest itself in protests, violence, and smears.  It was a vote for the people and by the people, and yet it wasn’t good enough for the people to decide.  Then when Miss California answered the question by Perez Hilton at the Miss USA pageant, that spawned outrage again.  MSNBC has intentionally smeared her, making this once again an ad hominem attack rather than debating the actual issue and respecting her for having a differing opinion.  Not to mention Perez Hilton himself resorting to name calling and others are trying to destroy her reputation..

So no matter how you deliver your dissent, it’s going to meet the same response.  And apparently that isn’t something that Joe spends much time comtemplating.  This is why I admire him.  It goes beyond what he says, which much of the article I agree with.  It’s about the fact that he knows where the sustinence for his life really resides.  It reminds me of a verse in Isaiah 2:22:

Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;
For why should he be esteemed?

I’d encourage you to read the entire article and not get stuck on the section I quoted above.  So, how long before the media gets outraged over what Joe said in this interview?
