White House budget director refuses to reassure Social Security recipients that next month’s checks will go out

Surprisingly commendable job done here by CNN’s Candace Crowley, pressing White House budget director Jack Lew on whether the Obama administration can promise that Social Security checks will go out next month regardless of what happens with the debt ceiling. I don’t know whether he was grilled like this on ‘Meet the Press’ and ‘This Week’ (Lew was everywhere this morning) but this is a good sign that perhaps the media is catching on to Obama’s scare tactics, at least on this one particular issue.

Lew knows full well that Social Security checks are only at risk to the extent that Obama himself makes an executive decision to withhold them. The money is there. How he thinks he get away with fear-mongering like this even after Obama showed his cards last week is a mystery to me.
