We’ve been reporting over the years the rare slips by Erdogan supporters who believe Erdogan should be the Caliph of the Muslim world. Well here’s a fairly big one.
The editor-in-chief of a big pro-government daily called the Star isn’t just arguing for the institution of the caliphate to be reinstated for the entire Muslim world, but for it’s caliph to be Erdogan:
TURKISH MINUTE – Pro-government Star daily Editor-in-Chief Nuh Albayrak said during a TV show on Sunday that he has been raising the issue of reinstating the institution of the caliphate and suggested President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan become the caliph, saying “Will you find a better caliph than Erdoğan?”
Speaking during a show on Ülke TV on Sunday, Kurtulmuş said he has been targeted by government critics for repeatedly raising the “caliphate issue” in his columns in the Star newspaper.
“They [Western powers] removed the institution of the caliphate, which had united the entire Islamic world. Now they have a free hand [in the Islamic world]. I have been targeted for raising this issue in my columns. Someone has to raise it. [Government critics ask] ‘Do you want to make Erdoğan a caliph?’ Yes. Let him be [caliph]. What will happen? Will you find a better caliph than Erdoğan?” he said.
What’s interesting about this is the context of his comments. He believes the Muslim world needs to be united and the institution of the Caliphate should be reinstated for that very purpose.
This is the same argument that Erdogan himself has been making for years. Note this from his trip to Iran back in 2015:
The Islamic world is at risk of “disintegration” due to the current conflicts in the region between the Sunni and Shiite strands of the Muslim faith, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in comments published Thursday.
Erdogan, who is increasingly touting himself as a leader of the Muslim world, said he would take steps to calm the tensions by meeting Islamic leaders.
The Turkish president, a devout Sunni Muslim, made the comments in a closed briefing to Turkish reporters while returning on his visit to Shiite Iran earlier this week.
What better way to do this as Caliph? As you can see here, he certainly has big supporters in Turkey already calling for this!
It remains to be seen if Erdogan actually becomes the new Caliph of the Muslim world, but all signs are definitely pointing in his direction.
If this Ottoman throwback does become the new Caliph of the Muslim world, then I believe the prophecy in Revelation 17 will be fulfilled:
10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. 11 The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition.
The seventh will come again as the eighth — and as we’ve shown you in the past, the seventh was the Ottoman Empire that fell back in 1923. And we already see it rising out of the earth and Erdogan wants that to be complete in 2023, exactly 100 years later.
