William Overstreet Jr. was a World War II fighter pilot who executed one of the most dramatic and daring dogfights of the war. Overstreet died this week at age 92.

Overstreet famously flew his fighter plane, dubbed the ‘Berlin Express’, between the arches of the Eiffel Tower in 1944. The spectacle rallied the French, who never forgot his heroics and awarded him their highest honor in 2009.

From NPR:

There’s a reason people call the heroes of World War II the “Greatest Generation.” Rest in Peace, sir.
