REPORT: McCabe actually authorized a criminal probe of AG Jeff Sessions last year…

Just when you think you’ve heard it all.

Remember when the Democrats were accusing Jeff Sessions of lying about a meeting he had with the Russian ambassador? Democrats were twisting his testimony to make hay out of nothing, suggesting he mislead them when in reality that wasn’t the case. The context of the questioning was Sessions’ work on the Trump campaign, not his work in his capacity as Senator.

Even Ted Cruz defended Sessions, arguing the context of the questioning and saying that Sessions had not lied. He called it a big nothingburger.

Well it turns out that at the request of Democrats, McCabe authorized a CRIMINAL probe into the ‘candor’ of AG Sessions testimony

ABC NEWS – Nearly a year before Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired senior FBI official Andrew McCabe for what Sessions called a “lack of candor,” McCabe oversaw a federal criminal investigation into whether Sessions lacked candor when testifying before Congress about contacts with Russian operatives, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

Democratic lawmakers have repeatedly accused Sessions of misleading them in congressional testimony and called on federal authorities to investigate, but McCabe’s previously-unreported decision to actually put the attorney general in the crosshairs of an FBI probe was an exceptional move.

According to the sources, McCabe authorized the criminal inquiry after a top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, and then-Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., wrote a letter in March 2017 to the FBI urging agents to investigate “all contacts” Sessions may have had with Russians, and “whether any laws were broken in the course of those contacts or in any subsequent discussion of whether they occurred.”

It’s unclear how actively federal authorities pursued the matter in the months before Sessions’ interview with Mueller’s investigators. It’s also unclear whether the special counsel may still be pursuing other matters related to Sessions and statements he has made to Congress – or others – since his confirmation.

The report says Sessions was not aware of this ‘criminal investigation’ when he fired McCabe last week:

One source told ABC News that Sessions was not aware of the investigation when he decided to fire McCabe last Friday less than 48 hours before McCabe, a former FBI deputy director, was due to retire from government and obtain a full pension, but an attorney representing Sessions declined to confirm that.

Sessions’ attorney has also explained that he is not under any criminal probe:

“The Special Counsel’s office has informed me that after interviewing the attorney general and conducting additional investigation, the attorney general is not under investigation for false statements or perjury in his confirmation hearing testimony and related written submissions to Congress,” attorney Chuck Cooper told ABC News on Wednesday.

I find this to be pretty amazing. And hypocritical. It was the Comey/McCabe FBI that let Hillary Clinton off the hook in 2016, despite the fact that we all knew she was guilty and the law was clear on that. They played partisan politics because she was running for president, yet they opened a criminal probe into their own AG over a nothingburger? To me, this just shows how partisan McCabe was in using his authority against Republicans.

Also, did you ever hear of the FBI investigating Eric Holder for Fast and Furious or Loretta Lynch for her secret meeting with Bill Clinton? Of course we probably wouldn’t have heard about them at the time, but I’d think it would have come out by now.

And hey if it turns out they did open a criminal probe into either of them, I’ll take back my charge of partisan hypocrisy. But you know as well as I do that’s very unlikely.

Levin is right when he labels Comey and McCabe ‘dirty cops’.
