The two oil tankers that were attacked last night in the Gulf of Oman may have had mines attached to the outside of the ship. Here’s a report by CNN that explains:
US Navy crew reported that they saw an unexploded mine on the side of one of the ships attacked today in the Gulf of Oman, according to a US defense official familiar with the matter, @barbarastarrcnn reports. https://t.co/6IzoXJuqrD pic.twitter.com/Wa5jvIKOwE

CNN’s Barbara Starr points out that these ships were not stopped, but rather underway and thus it looks like the mines were placed on them as they were traveling to their destination.
Which means, according to Starr, that Iran would have some pretty advanced underwater technology used to place these mines on the ships as they were in transit.
Starr also reports that these tankers are owned by commercial mariners with employees just trying to earn a living and no way of defending themselves. According to original reporting, they were carrying Japanese crude oil.
