The state attorney’s office has turned the Smollett case and the state of Illinois into nothing but a circus today.
First, they drop all charges and expunge Smollett’s record, without telling the Chicago PD.
Secondly, the Chicago PD Superintendent and Mayor publicly accuse the state attorney of ‘whitewashing’ Smollett’s case, saying justice did not prevail and suggesting that Smollett only got this deal because he’s a person of influence.
And now, the deputy state attorney, Joseph Magats, is saying that despite dropping all charges and expunging Smollett’s record, he still believes Smollett lied about the attack and filed a false police report:

Here’s more from the AP:
Prosecutors says a stunning decision to drop charges against Jussie Smollett doesn’t mean they no longer believe he staged a racial and homophobic attack against him in January.
First Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Magats told reporters Tuesday that he still believes Smollett filed a false police report. He says prosecutors “stand behind the investigation and the facts.” He added that “this was not an exoneration.”
A minimum requirement for the dropping of charges is typically that a defendant accept some responsibility and offer an apology.
But speaking after prosecutors told a judge they were dropping all charges, Smollett conceded nothing and did not apologize. He insisted he’d been “truthful and consistent on every single level since day one.”
I hate to say it, but Rahm Emanuel was absolutely right this morning. Smollett was able to strike a deal because he’s got money and influence in Chicago. And let’s be real, he’s black and gay, which makes him a double minority in the eyes of Democrats and gives him double the amount of privilege.
But Smollett didn’t do it alone. Illinois clearly has a HACK for a state attorney.
